Melaka - day 2

On the second day of our Melaka trip we once again ventured out in the mad dog midday sun, much to the incredulity of the locals, we braved the heat bouncing up from the tarmac road and walked* to visit the famous Nyonya kuih shop of Baba Charlie Lee.

If you’re travelling from Melaka town, the turning to Lorong Tengkera Pantai 2C which leads to the shop is on the left just as you pass Masjid Tengkera on your right.

*We hailed a taxi back.

We stood in the air conditioned shop to cool down and marveled, deliberating our final selection of goodies. We are impressed by their dedication to perfect and ensure that their precious heritage recipes of these labour and time intensive kuih are perpetuated. What treasure.

♥ The kuih were delicious ♥ We devoured this posy bunch selection for our brunch, clockwise from top left:

  • kuih abu sagu - a layered sago kuih bound with coconut milk, with a middle layer sweetened and flavoured with gula Melaka
  • pulut seri kaya (pandan)- a two layered kuih with a thick pandan custard top and glutinous rice base
  • turtle-shaped kuih koo merah (we found the skin of these a little thick)
  • kuih lapis - rice flour, tapioca flour and mung bean flour flavoured with coconut milk and sugar. The cake is steamed to set each new layer. This was a good consistency and the layers peeled off and separated easily
  • pulut seri kaya (kuning)- a two layered kuih with a thick kaya (coconut milk , egg and flour) custard top and glutinous rice base

The butterfly pea flower or Bunga Telang (Clitoria ternatea) is used for the decadent blue colouring of the kuih. We passed this creeper on our walk to the shop. We were charmed by the flower's otherworldly true blue hue.

We made a picnic of these leaf-wrapped parcels of goodness for our dinner at Melaka Sentral station before boarding our bus back to KL. Clockwise from top left:

  • kuih kochi hitam - black glutinous rice cake with gula Melaka sweetened, grated coconut filling
  • kuih kochi putih - white glutinous rice cake with gula Melaka sweetened, grated coconut filling
  • kuih bongkong - This little parcel proved to be our all time favourite. It contained a silky smooth tapioca flour/rice flour and coconut milk custard, doused in gula Melaka syrup. Patrons were snapping up this kuih in large quantities as soon as the tray was laid out.
  • lepat kacang - glutinous rice, grated coconut and black eye beans
